My Thoughts

Elie Wiesel

In my eyes, Elie Wiesel is a true hero. It takes an incredibly strong person to survive an event in which millions of innocent people’s lives were taken. Not only did he survive the Holocaust, he became a very talented writer to tell people of all over world about the horrible acts made against the Jews. Below is a very powerful quote written about the Holocaust.

Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky.
Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever.
Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.

After surviving three concentration camps, he was then put into a French Orphanage. After a few years at the orphanage he got into journalism and began writing for a French newspaper called L’arche. Before too long, Wiesel had published 30 books. Some of his accomplishments include winning the Noble Peace Prize, being appointed the chair of the President's Commission on the Holocaust, and winning the Congressional Gold Medal of Achievement.

Overall, I feel like Elie Wiesel should be looked at as a worldwide hero. He showed how awful the Holocaust was through his intense writing. After reading Night, I feel like I have a better understanding of how terrible it really was. Elie Wiesel is an amazing person and people should honor him as a hero.
